A first-year apprentice from Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC) has laid the foundation for national success after winning first place at the Guild of Bricklayers Western Regional Brickwork competition.

Owen’s exceptional skills have secured him a coveted spot in the National Finals, which will take place at Sunderland College. As a part of his study programme at BTC, Owen is employed by Edward McEwan of E A Construction, based in Wookey, Wells.

Another talented first-year apprentice from BTC, Riley, also demonstrated impressive craftsmanship, placing within the top seven competitors in the highly competitive Western regional heat.

The competition framework includes thirteen regional heats across the UK, culminating in the National Final.

Mark Hopkinson, Course Leader, shared,

We are all incredibly proud of Owen and Riley’s achievements. Owen’s first-place finish is a testament to his hard work, skill, and the quality of training he is receiving both with us at BTC and with E A Construction. We wish him the very best in the finals.

The Guild of Bricklayers, founded in 1932, is committed to promoting and upholding the highest standards of craftsmanship in brickwork. The Guild organises regional competitions annually through the UK’s construction college network, with the support of industry partners.

These competitions are a significant event in the construction training calendar, providing a platform for apprentices to showcase their talents – and for colleges and tutors to be recognised.

BTC would like to congratulate Owen and Riley on their successes so far, who are showcasing the high calibre of apprenticeship talent emerging from the South West. BTC wishes Owen the very best of luck in the National Final.
