Arboriculture Students get Creative with Felled Trees - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Bridgwater & Taunton College’s Arboriculture students have been using their skills to find creative uses for the trees that they fell.

Recently, the students made a bench from two trees felled on a private property; a Scots Pine and a Eucalyptus. The 40ft trees were over hanging a boundary, which meant that they needed to be removed in sections, providing lots of opportunities for the students to test their practical, problem-solving skills.

Curriculum Manager Mike Cullen said

Working in private gardens is an excellent learning environment for the students. In this instance, the students removed one dead tree and one rotten one, but instead of making a pile of logs, we decided to create something for the home owners to remember their trees by. The students did a great job, making the bench in three hours – and then taking a well-deserved rest in the spring sunshine!

Arboriculture students learn about the cultivation and management of trees, woodland, gardens and the environment, as well as exploring ways that wood can be reused rather than simply cut up.
