Specialist Arboriculture students at Bridgwater & Taunton College have been evaluating the latest brushwood chippers for Horticulture Week magazine.

The College has a strong history link with the industry and also strives to work closely supporting the local community. This is reflected in students and staff being asked to evaluate the latest specialist machines from global manufacturers whilst working on large scale tree work projects for the community.

Second year arboriculture students spent the day putting the machines through their paces and indeed pushing them to their limits. One machine was able to convert timber measuring over 30cm diameter into woodchips. Information on the testing can be found here.

Mike Cullen, Course Leader for arboriculture said,

“It's a fantastic opportunity for our specialist arboriculture students to get their hands on the latest equipment. Many students will leave College and go on to purchase machines like these as they forge their careers in the industry. A vital component of their course involves using and evaluating specialist equipment.

“For many years we have worked closely with horticulture week, the wider industry and the local community. Events like this enhance our students' experience, develop industry networking and prepare for a highly demanding industry.”

Zak Pottschulte Hevness, a second year arboriculture student enjoyed the day and said,

“The course is great; as well as learning about trees we also get to climb them and use specialist machines like these. I’m already working in the industry as part of my work experience but when I leave College as a qualified arborist I know the skills I’ve learnt here will put me in a great position to work in the industry.”
