The Level 3 Horticulture students visited the National Trust Barrington Court for a tour of the gardens focussing on the historic development of a fantastic example of an arts and crafts style garden and the planning and management of a large kitchen garden.

Oscar White, who previously studied at Heathfield Community School in Taunton and is currently a volunteer at Barrington Court said,

“A key part of the Level 3 Horticulture course is undertaking work experience. I decided to undertake my work experience at Barrington Court because the National Trust offer a well-structured volunteer programme and I have a particular interest in working in a public garden. The knowledge and skills I have gained during the course, along with my work experience should put me in an excellent position to secure employment upon completion of the course.”

Tom Cunningham, Course Leader for Horticulture added,

“Visiting gardens is an excellent way of broadening the students understanding of Horticulture and Barrington Court offers a great example of the management of a historic garden as well as the planning and cultivation of a large kitchen garden to name only a couple.

Horticulture is a diverse industry and can offer employment opportunities in public gardens, landscaping, food production and science. The Level 3 Horticulture course develops skills and knowledge across these key areas and is supported by work placements to enhance student’s employment prospects. “
