Adult learners from Cannington College have been getting a hands-on insight into the horticultural industry through a series of inspiring visits to some of the South West’s most respected growing and gardening enterprises.
Students recently visited The Newt in Somerset, where they enjoyed a fascinating tour led by David, Head of Productive Growing. The visit provided an exclusive look at the commercial growing operations behind the award-winning estate at Castle Cary.
They explored the extensive under-glass growing facilities, where tomato vines reach an impressive 16 metres in length allowing harvesting from March through to November. They also observed outdoor crops grown across fields, raised beds, and terraces, alongside the machinery and technology used to support efficient and sustainable production.
Following this, the group visited a nearby garden centre and carried out product research linked to their coursework. The experience enabled them to connect classroom learning with real-world examples of retail horticulture.
In a separate visit, Practical Horticulture students spent the day at Winrow Nurseries, a large commercial plant nursery specialising in propagation, nursery stock production, and plug plant growing for garden centres across the country. They followed the full production process gaining insights into the equipment, resources, and expertise required at each stage.
The day concluded with a guided tour of The Bishop’s Palace Gardens in Wells, led by Head Gardener James Cross. Students learned about the development of the historic gardens, including the creation of new borders with significant historical planting schemes.
These visits showcased the breadth of the horticultural industry from commercial food production to ornamental garden design helping to inspire and enthuse students as they embark on their studies.
Course Leader Emma Butler commented:
It’s great to be able to show students the diverse array of horticultural industries across the board, each quite specific, but with the common thread of growing crops throughout. Our thanks go the companies who accommodated us and demonstrated how industry practice can influence our studies and help make our students more work-ready for their future careers.
