Medals galore at the Bath & West Show! - Bridgwater & Taunton College

The recent Royal Bath and West Show at Shepton Mallet showcased student design and build skills within the Horticultural area with medals for three pop-up gardens and one stand. Gardens were all designed by the students, and built in one day under ideal weather conditions.

The RHS Level 2 students won a Large Gold medal for ‘The Wise Women’s Garden’ and the RHS Level 3 students won a Silver Gilt medal for ‘The Physic Garden’

The Level 3 full-time Horticulture student team won a Silver Gilt medal for ‘From Town to Country’, which was designed by student Pete Stainer, as well as winning the ‘People’s Choice’ award which was voted on by visitors to the Show.

The Land and Environment area also won a Gold medal for their indoor education display, which featured tree and wood identification, pollinator information, sustainability and general course and College information.

Pete Stainer, Level 3 Horticulture student said, “The Bath and West offers an exciting opportunity to implement skills and knowledge gained during the course, into the design and construction of a pop-up garden. I would like to thank our sponsors Somerlap Timber and Wyevale Garden Centre for providing materials and plants which supported us in putting the garden together.”

Nigel Cox, Curriculum Manager said, This was a great opportunity for the students to demonstrate the skills they have learnt whilst at the College in the real world. The skills they demonstrated were rightly rewarded with medals from professional judges.”

RHS student and first time exhibitor Hannah Spens-Black was delighted with the result and the success at the show has spurred her and her team on to undertake another project at the Taunton Flower Show.
