The Cannington College Nuclear Engineering Department, in partnership with EDF and the Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum, has been shortlisted for the Skills Collaboration Initiative of the Year Award, which celebrates organisations shaping the future of industry through innovation in education and training.

The award recognises projects, campaigns, or initiatives delivered jointly by two or more organisations that have made a significant impact on learning and development, either within their own institutions or across the wider sector.

This collaboration has been recognised for developing a unique curriculum that challenges apprentices to apply their knowledge in unfamiliar, real-world scenarios. By combining nuclear engineering training with an Aircraft Maintenance Programme at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, apprentices gain experience across avionics, weapons systems and condition monitoring, while also building problem-solving and adaptability skills.

The programme culminates in a showcase where apprentices present their findings to senior managers beneath the iconic Concorde in the museum’s main hangar, demonstrating both technical expertise and professional communication skills.

Paul Goss, Assistant Principal for Clean Energy, commented:

We are proud that our partnership with EDF and the Fleet Air Arm Museum has been recognised at a national level. This initiative demonstrates the power of collaboration across sectors and provides apprentices with truly unique opportunities to apply their skills in ways that prepare them for the challenges of tomorrow’s workforce.
