Match report: Team BTC Women's Football v Worthing College - Bridgwater & Taunton College

The Team BTC Women’s football squad went into their first ever play-off game after finishing 4th in the Cat 1 ECFA league. The first half of this home tie against Worthing College ended 0-0 with Worthing having the majority of possession, but Megan Robinson and Leonie Hobbs got some direct play in behind the Worthing defence.

The second half was much the same but Megan Robinson had three one-on-one opportunities that the Worthing goalkeeper dealt with well to prevent BTC from winning in normal time.

The game finished 0-0 and so the teams went straight into penalties. BTC’s first two penalties were saved and Worthing were 2-0 up. Jodi Filer stepped up to take the third to keep BTC in the tie and it was again saved, but the assistant referee flagged due to the goalkeeper coming off her line too early and the penalty was re taken. With even more pressure on her, Jodie retook her penalty and smashed it into the top corner. Team BTC were back in it and after five penalties it was all square at 3-3. Into sudden death and the pressure was on, two more penalties each and Worthing had to score to stay in it after two very good saves from Lauren Filer, who injured her wrist in the process. The Worthing player stepped up and put her effort wide. Bridgwater & Taunton College won 5-4 on penalties and are through to the semi-final.

Result:
Team BTC Worthing College 0  (5-4 after penalties)

Player of the match:
Jodie Filer – who had to retake her penalty and scored under pressure. If she hadn’t, Team BTC would have lost the game.
