This unique 9-acre centre in Cannington, enables the College to offer training in excavation, groundworks, concrete pouring and scaffolding; all skills that are highly sought after for the construction of nearby Hinkley C power station.
The Construction and Skills Innovation Centre replicates a real-life construction site, with industry-standard plant, machinery and equipment, and enables construction site standards to be taught alongside specific technical knowledge and skills.
It also has concrete infrastructures to facilitate bespoke training in steel fixing operations, one of the critical skills for the new nuclear build, via large-scale, practical, team-based tasks. Assessment is on-the-job – learners capture ‘live’ evidence using helmet-mounted ‘Go-Pro’cameras.
This facility is enabling the College to develop and deliver the UK’s first accredited qualifications in a number of important construction disciplines.
