Course Overview

This Level 3 course is suitable for you if you work with teachers in classrooms supporting the learning process in a primary, special or secondary school, or a college.You might be in a general support role or have specific responsibilities for a pupil subject area or age group. You might be a teaching assistant, classroom assistant, learning support assistant or special needs assistant.

Examples of areas you will study include:

  • How to support positive behaviour
  • Understanding how to safeguard children and young people
  • How to support children and young people during learning activities
  • Understand how to support learning of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities

This course gives you the opportunity to meet and share with others working in a learning environment and compare and discuss current practice. It offers you the opportunity to demonstrate competent performance of tasks related to your work and to develop your own skills and potential.

Assessment Methods

There are no written exams for this course. Instead you will build an e-portfolio which will include coursework and practical assessments in your workplace.

Progression Options

On completion of this course you could apply to do CACHE Level 4 Certificate for the Advanced Practitioner in Schools. and Colleges or the Sector Endorsed (Early Years) Foundation Degree.

Entry Requirements

You will have paid employment as a teaching assistant of at least 6 hours a
week in a school or college with at least 6 months experience in this role prior
to interview. You will already have a clear DBS prior to enrolment. Your
employment will need to last the duration of the course. You will also need:



  • Level 2 qualification or 5 GCSEs including English at grade C/4 or above
  • An interview is required for this course
  • Mature students welcome to apply

Attendance Requirements You will spend one morning in College each week. Self-study hours will be up to 10 per week.
