Course Overview

This dynamic and exciting course is an excellent route to university or a university level qualification, or if you want to enter the motorsport industry at technician level like some of our previous successful students.

Topics can include:

  • Race car set-up
  • Engine and chassis technology
  • Data logging and visual display systems
  • Component inspection test methods
  • Low carbon technologies
  • Rolling road engine testing
  • Motorsport vehicle maths, science and electronics.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is through a range of assignments and coursework containing theoretical and practical work, with online multiple-choice assessments at the end of each unit. You will also be expected to complete work experience in a relevant work placement.

Progression Options

On successful completion of the Level 3 qualification and a maths GCSE at grade 6 or above, you could progress to a Foundation Degree in Motorsport Engineering at University Centre Somerset. Graduates from the University Centre Somerset are now working at Empire Race Cars, Xtrac Engineering, McLaren GT, Radical Performance Engines and Bentley Cars. Alternatively, you could find employment in the motorsport industry.

Entry Requirements

You need to have achieved either the Level 2 Extended Diploma in Motorsport or Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair at Merit grade and have five GCSEs in the 9 to 4 range including maths, English and science. You will be invited to attend an informal discussion to assess your suitability for the course. You also need safety boots and overalls which can be purchased at enrolment.

I’ve really enjoyed learning all about the internals of cars and what a car relies on to run smoothly. This benefits me in the workplace because I know how parts work when I come to repair or replace them. So far my greatest achievement has been passing the first year.
