Course Overview

Energy creation and the required infrastructure is critical for the world around us to function, there has never been a better time to study engineering and science within this sector. This programme which is centred around nuclear energy will provide you with the pathway to becoming a highly skilled professional able to work in a variety of disciplines within the nuclear and energy sectors, including power generation, decommissioning, nuclear new build, defence or zero carbon energy.

In addition to the unique learning environment the National College for Nuclear (NCfN) provides, EDF Energy are supporting year one of this programme. This support significantly enhances the experience and includes additional content which is invaluable to your future success.

Additional content includes:

  • Nuclear behaviour training
  • Power station site visit
  • Degree Apprenticeship interview on successful completion of the course.

This course will appeal to those with a keen interest in engineering, technology and science. The curriculum has been designed in partnership with employers and delivered in the state-of-the-art NCfN, providing you with the experience and recognised qualifications to pursue a successful career in the sector.

You will study a combination of theory, applied theory and practical subjects across a broad range including:

  • Specialist engineering project
  • Engineering mathematics
  • Science
  • Microcontrollers
  • Electrical power
  • Engineering design
  • Mechanical behaviour of materials
  • Computer aided design
  • Work experience.

Assessment Methods

Most subjects are internally assessed through assignments graded at Pass, Merit and Distinction depending on the quality of the work. Some units are externally assessed using different methods, either through time constrained exams or external controlled assessments.

Progression Options

The course is equivalent to three A Levels and successful completion will provide progression to Apprenticeships including Degree Apprenticeships or full-time Higher Education. In partnership with the National College for Nuclear, we offer BEng Degrees in Mechanical or Electrical Nuclear Engineering awarded by The University of the West of England (Bristol) and endorsed by our industry partners.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs in the 9 to 4 range including higher maths at grade 5 or above. Alternatively, an appropriate Level 2 qualification with an overall Merit grade that includes higher maths is acceptable subject to interview.
