Top Tips for Students Starting College | Bridgwater & Taunton College

We are really excited to be welcoming new students to College in September and we’ve put together some top tips to help you prepare.

If you haven’t applied to BTC yet, there’s still time. Just click here to find the perfect course and complete the application form. We’ll be in touch to talk through your application to make sure you’ve made the perfect choice for you, before offering you a place in September.

1. Make sure you accept your offer and enrol

Make sure to check your emails!

After your interview, look out for an email with your offer. Accepting this offer secures your place on the course and you’ll be invited to enrol online. You’re then officially a student at BTC and can start preparing to join us in September.

2. Work out how you’re going to get to College

However you choose to get us, it will be important to know in advance which route you’re going to take and the costs involved. It may a good idea to practice the route before the start of term, that way you’ll know exactly where you’re going on your first day. For transport information including links to timetables click here.

Do you need help with transport costs?  Check out how to access help and support here.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask

At BTC, we have a dedicated team to help you with any concerns or questions. Whether you want careers advice, financial support or just somebody to talk to, the Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) team are always here to help. Feel free to either email info@btc.ac.uk or call 01278 441234 for a chat.

4. Everyone feels the same

One thing to remember is that everyone starting college is in the same position as you. Remember, we were all new once, so we know what it’s like and you’re bound to have lots of questions going through your mind.  We will have lots of staff members available at the start and end of every day to help you navigate your way around and you’ll always find a friendly member of staff to talk to, whether that’s your tutor, the person behind Reception or a member of the IAG team.

 5. Have a look at the website

Take an online tour of the campus. Remind yourself of where you’ll be coming in September! Check out Costa at Taunton and Bridgwater, the canteens and social spaces. This will help you feel more at home when you get here.

Whilst you’re there, sign up and follow us on social media where you’ll be able to keep up with all the news from across the College.

6. GCSE results day

Hopefully, you’ll be celebrating and delighted with your results.  If things haven’t gone according to plan, we have a team of staff ready to chat through your options.

Our IAG team is available should you need advice on your options if you haven’t been able to speak with your school teachers.

7. Make the most of the summer

Take time to recharge your batteries, but also grab opportunities that come your way. For example, you could get a part-time job, do some work experience or volunteer so that you’re making use of the skills you’ve learnt at school. Meet new people, read or watch movies around the topic you’ve chosen to study at College and visit interesting places if possible. All these things will help you get ready to make friends and start your journey at BTC.

If you’d like to get in touch with us over the summer, please email our Information, Advice & Guidance team at info@btc.ac.uk. Alternatively, click here for essential information and FAQs.

We hope you have a great break and look forward to meeting you in September!
