Course Overview

This non-assessed programme focusses on developing essential horticultural skills, for those wanting to use their knowledge for their own personal development and studies. There are no expectations of prior knowledge or learning for entry onto this programme.

Units of study/what is involved:

The course delivery is a practical hands-on course that encompasses the fundamental principles of horticultural practices, developing both horticultural knowledge and the application of practices. This allows you to apply your knowledge to become a successful hobby gardener, or to support you working in the industry.

Topics include:

  • The importance of soil: soil testing and cultivation
  • Propagation techniques
  • Plant and seed establishment
  • Pruning techniques
  • Care and maintenance of plant establishment
  • Sustainable garden practice
  • Identification of a range of plant, forbs,pests, diseases and disorders

Additional costs:

There may be some additional costs for organised trips.

Assessment Methods

The assessment of this course is by a range of in-college practical formative assessments and plant identification tests.

Progression Options

Successful completion allows you to consider the BTCC Principles in Sustainable Horticulture, BTCC Advanced Practical Horticultural Skills or indeed a suite of RHS courses.
