Course Overview

This course is for Automotive apprentices / mechanics who want or need to develop their mig / mag welding & spot welding skills.

What makes this course special?

The course is tailored to the needs of the automotive industry. Within this industry welding can form part of a mechanics day to day job. This course uses thin sheet materials and welding processes that are commonly used in the automotive industry to achieve quality welds. As well as learning how to weld, this course gives learners the opportunity to develop an undstanding of visual inspection of welds, by carrying out and interpreting Dye penetrant colour contrast NDT.

What is involved?

  • Health and Safety Inductionto includeWorkshop and equipment inductions, hazard spotting, risk assessing.
  • MIG/MAG – Setting machines up to produce quality welds, Produce quality joints (lap joint and square butt) on sheet mild steel in the downhand position.
  • Quality – Carry out a Dye penetrant colour contrast test and interpret the results. Understand what constitutes a quality weld.

Please note: this course will run subject to minumum learner numbers being met.

Assessment Methods

There is no accredited learning with this short course. However, delegates will be expected to complete two practical welding assessments.

Entry Requirements

The following PPE needs to be provided by employers for their employees to
use when caring out welding activities at college.
 



  • TIG/MMA welding gloves

  • Leather aprons

  • Head mounted welding screens

  • Air fed welding screens

  • Safety glasses

  • Ear plugs

  • Suitable steel/composite toe cap safety boots

  • Proban/flameproof overalls

  • P3 Respiratory protection which protects against welding fumes (GVS ELIPSE
    HALF MASK RESPIRATOR P3 is recommended)

Attendance Requirements You will attend College for three full day over one week and will be expected to complete a set of welding assignments
