Bricklaying Trade Evening Course - Bridgwater & Taunton College

Course Overview

This course is for labourers or self-employed people working on site in the construction industry who are looking to train and work towards becoming a fully trade qualified bricklayer but cannot attend a day release programme due to work commitments. Completion will earn the candidate a Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying alongside a Level 2 NVQ which will qualify you to industry standards as a bricklayer.

Learners will study the following units:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Understanding information, quantities and communication with others
  • Understanding construction technology
  • Construct solid walling incorporating isolated and attached piers
  • Construct cavity walling forming masonry structures
  • Construct masonry cladding

In addition to this you will be assessed on site, in the workplace whilst providing evidence of a variety of bricklaying tasks to qualify you to NVQ Level 2, this can take the form of observations, professional discussions and witness testimonies amongst others.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed via online, multiple choice exams as well as practical skills tests in our purpose built workshop.

NVQ assessments will include:

  • Observations of tasks being undertaken on site
  • Professional discussion interviews
  • Witness testimonies
  • A portfolio of evidence

Progression Options

Level 3 Diploma / NVQ in Bricklaying.

Entry Requirements

You will need to be working in the construction industry and have the
opportunity to undertake bricklaying tasks that can be observed.


A basic understanding of bricklaying would be advantageous but full training
will be provided.

Attendance Requirements The trade evening course will run 2 evenings per week during the academic calendar year for 2 years.
