Course Overview

You need to be employed to start an Apprenticeship. Please visit our vacancy page or if you have an employer, please ensure you add full contact details of your employer within your application. If you are unable to secure employment, you could enrol on a full-time study programme and transfer to an Apprenticeship at a later date. Please apply for a full-time course as your second option.

This course has three pathways; High Performance sports coach, Community Sports Coach and School Sports Coach.Applicants will already have sports coaching experience and ideally will have a coaching qualification in one or more sports.

This course is delivered in the workplace with additional on-line tutorial and training sessions. Apprentices will be able to access some HE webinars and attend a Sports Coaching Residential run by the College. On completion, apprentices will gain professional member of The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA.

Units of study/what is involved

High Peformance Sports coach will:

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of global trends, standards, strategies and contemporary influences in high-performance sport contexts.
  • Deliver relevant coaching pedagogies and processes that consider the high-performance context, culture, politics and key stakeholder needs.
  • Profile development needs to set and monitor goals and plans based on measurement of athlete/players’ bio-psycho-social attributes and sport-specific skills.
  • Ensure the design and delivery high-quality, inclusive sessions to accelerate athlete/player development and promote sustainable high-performance gains that enhance the national and international positioning of the sport.

Community Sports Coach will:

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of national trends, strategies for social change, local participation and performance data and contemporary influences.
  • Deliver appropriate coaching pedagogies and processes that consider the community sport and physical activity context, culture, constraints, geographical infrastructure and demographics.
  • Profile engagement and development needs to set and monitor goals based on participant motives and measurement of psychological, physiological, social, emotional [whole child/person] attributes and sport specific skills.
  • Ensure the design and delivery of high-quality, inclusive coaching sessions that meet the objectives of community/government/club initiatives whilst aiming to engage and enrich participants

School Sports Coach will:

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of education standards, trends, frameworks, paradigms and contemporary influences.
  • Deliver appropriate coaching pedagogies and processes that align to national physical education curriculum and considers the school context, category, culture, strategies and regulatory constraints.
  • Profile development needs to set and monitor physical education targets and plans based on measurement of participants’ cognitive, physical, social, emotional [whole child] attributes and psychomotor skills.
  • Ensure the design and delivery of high-quality, inclusive curricular and extracurricular lessons that meet school standards through whole child development and sustainable psychomotor skills using a mastery approach to learning.

Applicants will need to fund their own travel to attend the residential. All training, delivery and assessment costs will be met by either Organisational levy or government and organsiational contribution.

Assessment Methods

Delivery will be at the workplace and on-line teaching and tutorial sessions.  Final assessment will be at End Point Assessment which will comprise of:

  • Coaching Observation with questions
  • Profession Dicussion with portfolio of evidence
  • Presentation of Work based project with questions

Progression Options

Completion of this apprenticehip standard may enable learners to progress to the final two years of the BSc Applied Sport Science with Coaching Degree run by University Centre Somerset.

  • Experience of coaching in the pathway setting

  • Coaching Qualification (ideally, but not mandatory)

  • Applicants without English and math GCSE at 4/C or above will be required
    to complete and pass Functional Skills Level 2.

Attendance Requirements There is a residental opportunity during the term of the apprenticeship, and weekly on-line tutorial/training sessions.  There is no requirement for regular attendance at college.
